On Monday June 28th, firefighters were dispatched to a house fire and a motor vehicle accident with injuries at the same time.
As with any volunteer department, daytime crews are hard to come by at times and this incident was no different. One crew led by firefighter Bruce Shanabarger took the possible house fire which was directly across the stree from the fire station. While another crew led by Jim Horne took the personal injury accident.
It was discovered that the possible house fire was smoke coming from either a washer or dryer in the basement and the personal injury accident ended with one minor injury transported to a local hospital in good condition.
One man was critically injured on Monday when his car left the road for an unknown reason and rolled several times. He was ejected from the vehicle and flown via Samaritan Helicopter in critical condition.
Units from Churubusco, Noble Township, Noble EMS, Whitley EMS and Noble Sheriff were all on the scene to assist.
Around 23:30 Friday night units were dispatched to the 11300 block of U.S. 33 near Hildebrand Road for a "Signal 26". Allen County dispatch then advised that Samaritan was already in the air after a paramedic already on the scene requested they fly. First arriving units then discovered that the paramedic requesting the helicopter was involved in the accident. Fire 201 & Fire 208 arrived to find one possible party pin and 2 condition A's.
The female was extricated from the vehicle in 19 minutes and was flown to Parkview Memorial hospital in fair condition.
The accident is still under investigation.
Churubusco and Albion fire departments were dispatched to 400 South and 100 East early Saturday evening for a garage fire with exposure problems. Fire 201 arrived to find a small out building already on the ground and a small deteriorating building starting to catch fire. Both fires were easily contained with one unit from Churubusco Fire.
No injuries were reported.
Shortly after the barn fire in Noble County, units were dispatched to an ATV accident at S.R. 205 and Blue Lake Road. Fire 202 arrived to find that the ATV was the only vehicle involved and requested Samaritan fly. Paramedic units then arrived and ascertained that the man did not require Samaritan's assistance and they were returned.
The accident is still under investigation.
Churubusco fire was dispatched to a possible barn fire on 150 North in Whitley County at approximately 11:30 a.m. Friday morning.
Firefighter Wayne Krider arrived to find smoke coming from one of the smaller hog buildings on the property. He advised incoming units that the floor had a concrete entrance way, but that all of the rooms had a composite plastic flooring and they believed that's what was on fire.
Interior crews entered to find light smoke coming from an unknown origin and then located a large portion of the floor on fire and began to extinguish the flames.
Due to day time personnel being so short, a crew from Union Township assisted at the scene with ventilation and overhaul.
A possible chemical reaction being used at the farm started the blaze and fire units had to be decontaminated at the scene.
Medic 21 was also there to assist and no injuries were reported.
On Saturday afternoon around 3:00 PM three separate departments were dispatched to U.S. 33 & Johnson Rd. in Allen County. The assistant Chief from Washington Twp. arrived to find a large barn heavily involved. He then requested a northeast tanker response from Allen County. Churubusco crews were the first to enter the blaze and found a large pile of exterior siding blazing along with other miscellaneous items.
Crews fought the interior structure fire with a 3" line and a 1-3/4" line, while Washington Twp. crews secured possible exposures with other lines and extinguished the roof that had caught fire. It was then determined no more tankers were needed.
The blaze was contained to one section of the barn, which sustained heavy smoke and water damage.
It took crews approximately 20min to extinguish the fire.
No one was injured.
In the early morning hours of 10/12 Churubusco and Noble Twp. units were dispatched to a "10-70 unknown origin" on U.S. 33 near the Noble/Whitley line or possibly near S.R. 9.
Further information was received that it was a vehicle fire in the ditch just north of the county line. First arriving Churubusco units arrived to find a fully engulfed vehicle and possibly someone trapped inside.
A local man was found to be in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Later that same weekend, a Markle man was traveling on U.S. 33 very near the previous accident and hit a tree head-on. Fire 202 arrived to find the man pinned in his vehicle and incoherent. Samaritan was asked to the scene and the man was flown to Parkview Memorial in critical condition.
Both accidents are still under investigation.
